Newton proved that each action has an equal and opposite reaction. This law proves itself in the response to the Blue Tiger's previous assignments. What does RANDS stand for? Who sent the drought spirit in the first place and for what purpose? How can these beings remain in the shadows during an age of spaceflight, satellite imagery, digital photography and a rise in the number of mages? Who is really the most intelligent species on the planet?

Ripples in the Waves

"This is Operative M and N. We have had a sighting of unidentified biological magioform. Uploading report now." What appeared to be two men dressed in black suits and sunglasses were sitting in the seat of a sedan. If one looked at their identification cards, they were nominally attached to a nearly unheard of division among the Energy Resources and Development Agency. It was titled the Research and Development of Alternative N-Dimensional Sources.

Their alleged control officer looked at the in-depth report. The two cleanup agents had arrived at the scene too late. There were traces of a fight, measured by their Kirlian visors, but the traces faded away quicker than usual. The two had arrived, altered the man's memories through electronic pattern hypnosis into a plausible story.

There were traces of a weather modification magioform, but it was dispersed almost five minutes later after they arrived. There were also traces of a human. The two men scanned the grass with microscopic vision using their ocular implants, noting the blades of grass trampled in the surrounding battle.

The human had apparently taken on the magioform and won. According to the farmer that had been interviewed, it had been a Scott Summers of the World Examiner. Both agents calculated an extremely low probability of real identification.

The control officer, ramrod straight, behind the console thought so too, but the division couldn't afford to guess. In a far distant warehouse, a spy was activated. This one was totally incapable of defending or attacking anything. Its primary function was to gather and relay information. A holographic image inducer masked the metallic appearance of the robot. It marched out to gather data. Its first stop was the World Examiner.

The human was apparently capable of great speed, as the two agents found regular tracks two feet apart in the grass. It then vanished into the road, which was well paved.

Control did not like unknowns. Unpredictability and information were the two strongest points in anyone's favor. The other one was a common weather modification magioform, which indulged in weather blackmail. There were files on these.

It called up files on metahumans that were capable of taking out a drought spirit, great speed, and rapid Kirlian dispersal without leaving more tracks to experienced cyborg agents.

"Someone awakens." A sibilant hiss was heard in the minds of the four lieutenants. They all knew what it meant. A spiritual warrior had emerged, with the powers bestowed by their lineage.

"Our drought spirit in New York was destroyed," a tentacled ball communicated. "Shall I send more to investigate?"

"What was a drought spirit doing in New York?" the voice changed to that of a human male.

"There had been a rumor of the sword in New York. I sent a drought spirit to investigate. It decided to make a little extra on the side without our knowledge, and was destroyed," the tentacled ball replied.

"Part of those who visited France right before the peasants started starving?" The voice changed to that of a shark.

"The very ones, master," the tentacled ball replied.

"Very well. Klsyfrx. You shall search for the one who destroyed the drought spirit. Tiiba and Onetsu shall aid thee." The voice changed tone to an odd, breathy whisper.

There was an unfolding of space in the road closest to the hidden lair, and two creatures stepped out.

"Ah? Master? I do not disagree with your choices, but why is one a giant chicken, and the other a wall of stone on legs?" The creature who looked human, except for flickering eyes of flame asked.

"Are you questioning me?" the voice took on the character of rolling thunder.

"No, I am simply curious why your assistants have taken such glorious forms?" Flickering flames recovered hastily.

"Inquire of them. I do not bother with petty matters." The mental pressure on the four lieutenants was gone. The fire spirit looked at the giant chicken, and the wall of stone on legs.

"I sense a threat becoming active again." A white mouse considered the consequences of warning her pet black magician.

She decided that if her pet black magician were to encounter the form, he had an even chance of surviving, and she had too many experiments planned for her subject. She would not warn her pet, but her colleagues. The familiars of the other black mages would sacrifice the mages that were not needed. A stroke of cauterization would inspire new heights of magery to deal with the oncoming threat and get rid of the timeservers.
