Appearance: Can vary considerably, given Enigma's abilities, but he tends to adopt two main physiologies, that of Allen James, fictitious brother of Dr Karen James, a lecturer in cognitive psychology who knows of Enigma's non-human nature and has taken him in, and that of Enigma himself.
Enigma is just over 6ft tall and well built, his 'costume' normally looks like a plain black skintight bodystocking with a lighter question mark over the heart. The surface has a slightly slick appearance, like crude oil, with subdued and barely noticeable rainbow patterns which slowly swirl around. The 'cowl' has no holes for mouth or eyes, but since it's not really a separate costume he can form a mouth when he needs to speak.
Allen is shorter, plumper, and looks a bit bookish, with glasses and thinning unruly hair. |

Background: Not that he knows this, but Enigma is actually a hyperspacial entity. His consciousness is a sentient hyperspacial energy matrix which is generated by a concentrated cloud of hypermatter (hyperspace is where all that dark matter that they're looking for ended up). Some of his hypermatter protrudes into normal space and serves to soak up background radiation (which is no longer strong enough to penetrate into hyperspace) while the rest in hyperspace picks up stray hypermatter particles, thus replenishing him. Since his hyperspacial component is always connected to every single part of his body in normal space, fragmentation of that body means nothing, and it can always be pulled back together. However, a sufficiently large burst of energy can disrupt his energy matrix causing severe problems or even death. The sheer heat of his impact with the ground when he fell to earth almost killed him and he lost some of his hypermatter mass when it was turned into plasma on vapourisation. This disruption of his energy matix is why he has no memories, much of his mind was wiped clean. |
